RAMALLAH (Ma’an) – Saturday, 25 August, 2012 – The Palestinian Union of Journalists on Saturday called for the release of a Palestinian TV reporter who went missing in Syria earlier this week.Bashar Fahmi Amin al-Qaddoumi, 31, was reporting for Al-Hurra TV in Aleppo when he disappeared on Monday, along with his cameraman Cuneyt Unal.

The journalists union said it was concerned by reports that al-Qaddoumi, a Palestinian with Jordanian citizenship, had been injured just before his detention. The reporters are believed to have been with Mika Yamamoto, a 45-year-old Japanese journalist who died the same day of injuries sustained in a gunfight between Syrian forces and rebels.

Free Syrian Army fighters released a video stating that al-Qaddoumi and his cameraman had been captured by Syrian security forces.
The journalists union called on Syrian state and opposition forces to respect international law protecting journalists, and to release information about the pair. Escalating military operations in Syria are increasing the serious danger to journalists’ lives, the group said in a statement.

It called on the Syrian journalists union, as well as Arab and international groups, to press forces to release the reporter.
